Frydenberg was defeated by independent candidate Dr Monique Ryan in his Melbourne seat of Kooyong and was among a number of senior Liberal MPs to lose to so-called teal independents backed by wealthy political activist Simon Holmes a Court. The network, which incorporates an optical fibre and fixed wireless technology known as mmWave, is completely independent and bypasses the National Broadband Network (NBN).  mmWave is a short-range, high-frequency network technology delivered via small antennae, typically placed on the roofs of buildings.
